If you can dream it, I can plan it.

How to Plan Winter Travel During Uncertain Times

Travelling During Uncertain Times, Why Planning Ahead Matters More Than Ever.

It feels like every week brings a new headline.

Airport closures in places like Cuba, regional restrictions in parts of Mexico, airline staff strikes, viruses causing outbreaks, severe weather disruptions, unexpected cancellations. The list goes on, and it can feel exhausting just trying to keep up.

And yet, at some point during the winter, the pull of the sun becomes irresistible.

Whether you are dreaming of a romantic escape, a family holiday over the school break, or gathering everyone for a reunion in the islands, the desire to get away is real. What many travellers do not realize is that uncertainty does not eliminate demand. It often increases it.

When airline routes are reduced, resorts are looking to fill their rooms with promotions, or travellers delay decisions, availability tightens quickly. Prices rise. Options shrink. Flexibility disappears.

If sunshine, connection, and a reset are priorities for you this 2026 winter season, here is the top 4 things to consider:

1. Plan early and move with intention

Waiting rarely works in your favour. The best flight times, family friendly room categories (especially families of 5 or multiple bedrooms), and preferred resorts are always the first to go.

Planning early does not mean rushing blindly. It means being proactive. It allows you to secure value, protect your dates, and have a strategy in place if adjustments are needed.

Consider how important this is while the people who usually book budget vacation to Cuba are looking for an alternative.  The increase in demand will push prices up in Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Mexico.

2. Protect your investment

Cancellation insurance is not optional right now. It is essential.

Fun fact, as a Travel Advisor who is based in Ontario, legally I have to ask my clients if they need cancellation/medical travel insurance but what you need to know is that travel insurance protects more than just your travel package. It protects your time, your financial investment, and your peace of mind. In an environment where weather systems, operational disruptions, and policy changes can shift quickly, flexibility is everything.

3. Consider whether a cruise is a smarter option

For some travellers, a cruise offers built-in flexibility that land/AirbnB/hotel or all-inclusive stays do not.

Cruise lines can adjust itineraries when needed. If one port is unavailable, the ship can often pivot to another destination while still delivering the experience you signed up for, sunshine, entertainment, dining, and relaxation. For families and multi generational groups, that adaptability can make a meaningful difference.

An all-inclusive resort can be wonderful, but it is tied to one location. If that location experiences disruption, your options may be limited.

4. Prepare for the unexpected

This does not mean expecting disaster. It means travelling with realistic expectations.

Flights may shift. Weather may delay departure. A preferred excursion may sell out. When you plan with flexibility and guidance, these moments become manageable rather than catastrophic.

Travelling during difficult times is not about ignoring reality. It is about navigating it wisely.

For instance, I love exotic destinations but when it comes to ensuring my clients’ vacation will experience minimal disruptions, I will advise them to choose a destination with multiple flights per day or week (Cancun is a great example).

The truth is, meaningful travel often becomes even more important when the world feels uncertain. Time with your partner, laughter with your kids, reconnecting with extended family, those moments matter.

With the right planning, the right protection, and the right strategy, you do not have to be left in the snow. You can still find the sun.

Ready to travel confidently, even during uncertain times? Let’s create a plan that protects your investment and delivers the sunshine you deserve.
